Baby Driver Review: Pros and Cons

First what I’ll say is this – what a film. Truly it’s been a while since I have seen a movie filled with film making artistry and originality, especially during the summer blockbuster season. “Baby Driver” is certainly a welcoming change of pace from “reboots (some we never asked for), superheroes, and sequels.” The Plot Synopsis reads like this, “Talented getaway driver Baby (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. After meeting the woman (Lily James) of his dreams, he sees a chance to ditch his shady lifestyle and make a clean break. Coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), Baby must face the music as a doomed heist threatens his life, love, and freedom.”

For people such as myself that live by the RT Score (Rotten Tomatoes) – the film currently sits at a 98% at the time of this writing – and has already achieved the “Certified Fresh” status. As a result, my expectations were high for this film. So, let’s get into it, shall we?

Pro # 1: Ansel Elgort’s Portrayal of “Baby.”

If Ansel Elgort is not a household name, or an A-lister already – then I can confidently say that later down the line this film will be marked as his major, “breakout role” and the film that cemented his A-list status. I wouldn’t be surprised if after this movie – MANY studios will want him either as a super-hero or a franchise leading man. Ansel’s portrayal of “Baby” truly carries this film and keeps the audience enormously invested in the story’s outcome. Almost instantly, “Baby” is incredibly likable & charming from the start.

Honorable mention goes to Jamie Foxx’s character, “Bats.” Personally, it has been a while since I have seen Jamie Foxx deliver a memorable performance. Mr. Foxx brought his A-game in this role.

Pro # 2: Refreshing, exhilarating action and car driving on par with the “F&F” (Fast & Furious) Films

Wow! The action sequences and shootouts are bombastic, refreshing, and exhilarating. The opening sequence instantly sets the tone of the movie and the bad-ass driving skills of “Baby.” Director Edgar Wright’s action film-making is memorable and will join the list of some of the best “heist, car-chasing” films in history.

Pro # 3: The Payoff for “Baby’s” Story is Satisfying

Above all, the film never forgets its anchor – “Baby” and his journey as he explores the realities, brutality, and dangers of the criminal lifestyle. We go on this journey with him – and the conclusion of his Arc is truly satisfying and emotionally fulfilling. His actions at the film’s end are one of the most surprising I have seen in a while, and particularly for most “crime, heist” films where the central character’s fate is often predictable.

Con # 1: The Plot is NOT the most intriguing, or entertaining aspect of the film

While the action and stakes throughout the movie feel very genuine, I will say that the plot is not the most appealing aspect of the movie. For starters, I did not feel invested in any of the characters besides “Baby,” which means that the heist jobs involving the other characters felt either drawn out or less urgent than the director intended them to be. In fact, certain scenes throughout the film feel very drawn out. Finally, once the movie reaches its climax, certain moments seem downright over the top & unbelievably insane - as if the director took his foot off the gas pedal - and allowed his characters to just run rampant throughout the remainder of the story.

Con # 2: Personally speaking – the film’s soundtrack isn’t as memorable as the Guardians of the Galaxy Franchise

As stated, this is more of a minor musical taste issue. Most would agree that the GotG Franchise has one of the most memorable soundtracks put on film, and works seamlessly throughout the movie’s story. Some may disagree and will find the music of “Baby Driver” to be just as memorable. However, since this a film where the central character uses various kinds of music, I expected a little bit more. Nonetheless, I did find the use of “Baby’s” music to be brilliant.

The Most Important Factor: The Entertainment Value – Will you Enjoy This Movie?

By far, the toughest question to answer. The advertising the film suggests that it’s primarily an action movie – It’s NOT. There are just as much quieter, character scenes that are not detrimental towards the film but maybe too much of a slow-burn for casual audiences expecting a high-octane action film. The action scenes are more so sprinkled in throughout the movie. Finally, I suspect that this is the kind of film that will be MOST appealing to serious movie critics and "cinephiles" than the casual movie goer. I did enjoy the movie, but audiences will have to decide for themselves whether they thoroughly enjoyed it. Just be aware that this isn’t an F&F movie.

David’s Score: 4.5 (3 Pros, Plus the Film’s Favorable Entertainment Value) = 90% A -
